Allergy-test prices: compare relevance, not allergen counts
An offer covering many foods can look like better value than a short, targeted request. But a larger list is not automatically the right allergy investigation. Before comparing prices, ask the clinician which suspected reactions need investigation and what each proposed test measures.

Ask whether the test is total or specific IgE
A quote should identify whether it measures total IgE or specific IgE to named allergens. Ask for that list in writing. An ambiguous “allergy screen” does not let you compare offers accurately, and an extensive list does not mean that every positive finding represents a clinically important allergy.

Do not confuse food-IgG packages with diagnosis
AAAAI advises against using food-IgG panels to diagnose food intolerance or sensitivity. A low advertised price does not overcome a test’s evidence limits. Ask what diagnosis the test is validated to support, rather than assuming a long coloured report can select a safe exclusion diet.

Include interpretation in the comparison
Ask who explains the result and whether that discussion costs extra. Avoid paying for unnecessary repeat panels or changing a child’s or adult’s diet widely without appropriate advice. A suspected severe allergic reaction needs emergency care immediately; an allergy-price enquiry must never delay it.
