Practical questions

ESR or CRP on a quote: a substitution needs approval

If your order says ESR and an offer lists CRP, do not assume it is a harmless change in wording. Equally, seeing both names on a package does not prove both are necessary. The prescriber’s clinical question should determine the order before the price comparison begins.

Ask the team to reproduce the request exactly

ESR and CRP are different measurements associated with inflammation. Ask for a quote that lists the exact requested marker and separates any optional addition. If the item is unavailable, return to the requesting clinician for an alternative plan rather than allowing the payment screen to choose a substitute.

Check for standard versus high-sensitivity CRP

A quote for hs-CRP is not automatically the requested standard CRP investigation. Ask the laboratory to confirm the full test name and the intended use with the clinician. Similar abbreviations are a reason to clarify the item before collection, not a reason to buy every variant.

Avoid paying to chase a flag

Neither marker identifies a diagnosis by itself. If a previous result was flagged, ask what a repeat would change and whether its timing matters. Keep the original report for the review. Buying several differently named inflammation tests without a plan can add expense without answering the reason for the first request.
